Brooklyn is well-known for valuing what makes each thing special. This is clear from the many unique art pieces created here. People in this area are also finding creative ways to help the environment, which we often cover in this blog. Leroy’s Place stands as an excellent example, combining unique art with sustainability.
Leroy's Place is located on 7th Avenue in Park Slope, just a quick 3-minute walk from the 7th Ave station. According to its founder, Serene, the studio has four artists working there, creating art, and hosting community events like music and dance performances.

Serene shared with me the inspiration behind starting this business. Initially, they were involved in creating video works, constructing elaborate set pieces, and crafting large puppets. Over time, their interest shifted towards establishing a unique space, leading to the inception of this business.

Inside the store, you'll find many unique art gifts ,such as pictures.

Serene explained that these art gifts are handmade and designed by independent artists. She highlighted the uniqueness of each piece, making them very popular.

Furthermore, the store features a variety of stunning artworks, including puppets and a chair. Customers are encouraged to interact with the puppets, sit in the chair, and take photos with them.

Additionally, these artworks align with sustainability.

Serene mentioned that these artworks are crafted from recycled materials such as cardboard.

Annaut is an organization which makes new denim from scraps and ends that are released from the production process.
Focusing on the loss and waste of denim, they reuse and make denim from cut scraps because they want to reduce waste and be a sustainable brand.

The reason they established this organization:
Even though each idea is created with a lot of passion and heart, the workers involved globally were making a single piece of clothing using countless materials with many unused and wasted supplies that were ultimately discarded.  Annaut noticed the situation and began thinking of ways to improve their brand's process, directly.

In the production process, they have been making things in collaboration with sewing factories that handle denim for many years to reduce water by 70% of conventional equipment.
The charm of the Annaut product is that it is made of a nice material that mixes hues of blue and white, but looks light blue from a distance.  In addition, it has a more natural stretch than ordinary denim, and it is extremely comfortable to wear.  They have introduced efforts to recycle clothing (CLOTHLOOP) to make it easier to adjust the sleeve hem so that it can be used by any age.

They aim to make it as common as the plastic bottles are and recycle in the same way, therefore, they don't make anything excessive in quantity and unnecessary quality.  However, they will elaborate on skills and ingenuity so that the product can be used for a long time. 
They avoid creating waste and loss while turning it into something valuable, with a purpose to always be life-size with honesty and integrity!

Entrance to Wamodern Kimono Exhibit

March 20th through March 27th we held a kimono exhibit at J-Collabo featuring a group of artist’s works from Kyoto, Japan.
One of the artists with his collection is Katsumi Hayashi. His collection consists of; three down jackets made from recycled materials. Three women’s and three men’s dress shirts made of hemp material. A hand painted long unisex jacket, short floral vest and a floral short sleeve dress top. Lastly, an elegant Japanese Royalty inspired silk women’s dress.

Next section of the event is the artist, Osamu Nasu’s collection consisting of a variety of accessories. Including, three traditional Japanese handbags and a variety of scarfs with Japanese patterns. Three popcorn elastic fabric bags. A large selection of jewelry with milk plastic beads, wooden beads and pearl beads. Milk plastic also known as; Casein plastic which is a traditional Japanese sustainable alternative for jewelry materials. The remaining jewelry on display consists of, necklaces, broches, earrings and bracelets. He also had three clothing items on display consisting of a yellow short vest, a black dress shirt and a black button-down dress. Each clothing item is made from Tsumugi fabric which is a woven cotton-silk fabric that is a Japanese traditional material method.

Another artist who displayed his works is Koichi Fujii. His works consists of a variety of kimonos with a modern twist. Two open kimonos and long length with long sleeves. One of them is a dark blue and black and the other is a black and white, tie dye prints made from deer leather. There is also a display of a black and white tie dye and deer leather long open vest and a short open long sleeve jacket. Tie dye is a traditional Japanese pattern technique that dates back as far as the 6th century in Japan and China. Along with the leather there is a long dark denim kimono jacket and a short woven and patched light multi-colored short denim kimono jacket.

Next there is a display of four modernized women’s kimonos by the artist: Kentaro Watanabe. One was a soft yellow and white paisley print dress with an adjustable belt that wraps around the waist. Two open long sleeve shorter length kimonos with paisley print, one a soft yellow and white and the other a white and chocolate brown color. One medium length button down long sleeve.

More items include an air filter that comes in multiple decorative panels and cedar wood tote bags and hand-purses by the artist, Ko.

Additionally displayed are two large traditional style kimonos made by all of the artist as a mass collaboration.

In the front room we displayed the fabric and materials used to make the kimono pieces. The textiles were made by the artist, Yohli Kawai. A lot of them were made using the Tsumugi technique which is a traditional Japanese tradition of weaving silk to create textiles.

Penguin Coding School is located on 7th Avenue in Park Slope. It takes just 5 minutes from 7th Ave station.
Penguin Coding offers children (age 6-18) computer programming education in both in-person and online classes. It has several kinds of class like Scratch, Java, Pvthon, Javascript, Minecraft, and Mobile Apps.

Penguin Coding strongly focuses on enabling kids to enjoy learning. 

You might think computer programming might be complicated. But, once kids can enjoy and thus increase motivation, they can learn quickly.
